North Miami police department under fire since a police officer shot a man in the leg while he was laying down with his hands up. Majority of the black men and woman who are mistreated by authorities end up severely hurt or in most cases, dead.
Charles Kinsey thought that if you have your hands up and you’re laying down that the police wouldn’t shoot.
“As long as I’ve got my hands up, they’re not gonna shoot me, that’s what I’m thinking.” “Wow, was I wrong.” Kinsey told CNN’s Miami affiliate station WSVN.
Kinsey, who is now hospitalized also told the station that he was more worried about his patient who has autism. The 23-year old patient had a toy car with him when the police arrived and Kinsey, in a defenseless position, tried to explained that to the officers.
Three shots went off and one of the bullets hit Kinsey in his leg. He still had his hands up. When he asked the officer why did he shoot, the cop replied “I don’t know.”
Kinsey was on the ground in handcuffs wounded for 20 minutes before an ambulance arrived. The officer’s name has not been released and he has been placed on administrative leave.
North Miami Police Chief Gary C. Eugene held a press conference and said that the case has been turned over to the Florida Department of Law Enforcement. He plans to conduct a transparent investigation because once again, we are left with many unanswered questions.
