Back in May 2014, a South Carolina woman, Carla Denise Garrison was shopping with her then 8-year-old daughter who had picked up a needle in a Target parking lot. Garrison snatched the needle out of her daughters hand and ended up pricking herself with the needle.
According to USA Today Garrison went to the doctor to get tested for HIV and hepatitis, the results came back negative but she was given medication just in case she ended up contracted HIV. The medication made her sick and caused her and her husband to miss work. Garrison’s attorney initially asked for a $12,000 settlement but Target corporation offered her $750, reported on USA Today. A jury awarded her over $4.6 million .
