Dylann Roof, the white supremacist who took nine black innocent lives at a South Carolina church in 2015 is now asking for mercy.
A jury found Roof guilty of 33 federal charges, and gave him the death penalty in January 2017 but now Roof’s lawyers are appealing his conviction and death sentence.
His legal team argues their client was “too mentally ill” to stand trial or represent himself at sentencing.
However, during the trail when Roof learned his legal team wanted to portray him as mentally ill, he decided to represented himself.
He believed “his sentence didn’t matter because white nationalists would free him from prison after an impending race war.” (Roof received $4 million in donations from other WS.)
Now “experts” are saying that Roof displayed signs of a mentally ill person but other officials found him to be competent.
If Roof is found to be mentally ill, it could have an impact on the case.
