Mayor de Blasio announced Sunday (May 17) that it’s not safe for NYC beaches to reopen.

The news comes a few days after Governor Cuomo announced state beaches would reopen for Memorial Day Weekend.

“It’s not the right thing to do,” Mayor de Blasio said during his daily briefing. “The idea here is to put health and safety first. No one has to be reminded, we are the epicenter of this crisis.”

Part of his concerns regards opening public places too quickly. States such as Florida and Georgia have already begun reopening different parts of their business.

“The city will add fencing to control entry points and access to beaches will be further restricted if social distancing or no-swim rules are not observed,” de Blasio said

Take a look at his statement below:

It is possible things can change over the summer, it depends on the reduced number of COVID-19 cases.

State beaches in other regions such as New Jersey, Connecticut, and Delaware will still reopen as announced.
