Although the economy is slowly reopening, the novel Coronavirus is still here.

New York City mayor Bill de Blasio announced that major NYC events that require city permits are canceled through September. So events like the annual West Indian Day parade, Feast of San Gennaro, fashion week, park events and street fairs will not happen this year. The only “events” allowed to take place are Black Lives Matter protests, de Blasio said.

The West Indian Day Parade organizers haven’t officially announced that the event will be canceled. However, since they would need a permit, de Blasio said it would be denied in order to stop the surge in COVID-19 cases. Permits will also be denied for all events that are larger than one block and stage/video events that require amplification.

“While it pains me to call off some of the city’s beloved events, our focus now must be the prioritization of city space for public use and the continuation of social distancing, de Blasio said.
